What is aviation liability insurance?

Aviation liability insurance can help with bodily injury and property damage from specific covered risk exposures. There are many subgroups that can make up liability insurance in a policy such as passenger liability, product liability, aviation combined single limit (CSL) insurance, and medical payments, to name a few. Despite all the variations, they all exist to help protect the insured financially from covered liability exposure.
 
A common liability limit for small piston engine single engine aircraft is $1,000,000.  This level of coverage is common for light single engine piston aircraft like a Cessna 172, Cirrus SR22, Piper Archer, or Diamond DA40. As well as twin engine pistons like the Beechcraft Baron, Diamond DA42, and Cessna 310. Light helicopters like Robinson R22, or Bell 206 also commonly use a liability coverage of $1,000,000.  In many cases more liability insurance can be available.  Higher liability limits of $10,000,000 to $100,000,000 or more are commonly available for modern turbine aircraft with professional crews.  Turboprops like King Air, Daher TBM, Pilatus PC-12, and Piaggio Avanti commonly have $1,000,000 to $10,000,000 or more. Light jets like Embraer Phenom 300, Pilatus PC-24, and Cessna Citation frequently have a $1,000,000 to $10,000,000 or more.  A modern Challenger jet, Gulfstream, or Hawker with a professional crew may be able to obtain $100,000,000 liability or more.

What aviation insurance hull value should I place on my aircraft?

Most of the time, policies are written through an agreed value arrangement.
